On Wednesday the 8th of June
2016 we welcomed a group of Irish
Volunteers from the
LYIT Gaisce Society headed by Florence
Blake.
I meet them at the airport at around
10:00am, and after stopping for a break
at the, motorway services took them
directly to their hotel where they could
rest up in preparation for the hard work
ahead.
The next day they began the labour
intensive job of building an underground
waste water storage tank for irrigation at our Garden of Eden
site. For the first five days of their
work the weather was very hot, with
intense blazing sunshine, making the
work very uncomfortable. However they
all managed to plough through this with
a happy smile. Passing bucket after
bucket of sand, cement and rock
chippings while grooving to the music.
Later the next week they had a break
from this task waiting for shuttering to
be built by our in house engineer Son,
so they filled our very old truck with
bricks and took them down to our main
Children’s center to lay a walkway by
the lunch bell.
Later that same week the heavens opened
bringing this years monsoon season,
halting the water tank project because
of flooding, so they set about painting
the front of our PCU (Palliative Care
Unit) at The Garden Of Eden.
All in all over the ten day period the
whole group worked very hard under very
difficult conditions. On their last
night with us they joined us for the
evening meal with the children before
going off for a short brake on Koe Samet.
They set out the next day for a night in
Bangkok before catching the flight for
home. |
